Well done! 90 minutes is about my limit then my lower back starts making itself known.

This is very much a thing for me the last 24 hours getting back into riding. My ass has some getting in shape to do, along with my legs.

My cardio vascular system might be shot

My cardio hasn’t been my limiting factor at all . It’s more getting my ass used to a saddle again for me.

Good work! Are you using an app to track your fitness?

No, probably should. But no

I’ve been able to get some good insights into my fitness progress by using a heart rate monitor and an app. If nothing else, a heart monitor can help you gauge level of effort and correlate it back to how you feel and how hard you should or shouldn’t push yourself.

Ask the shop for a demo saddle.

16% hills on a 40lb mtb hurt apparently. Maybe I should’ve tried getting a little resiliency back in my legs before doing dumb stuff like that after 3 months of sedentary behavior.

I’ve also made a couple rounds of adjustments that are helping. From where we guessed at delivery, I’ve been incrementally moving up and forward. I also changed the angle a bit that has it feeling better. I’m going to go on another road ride this evening to test them out, but beyond just my ass not used to being in a saddle, I think not enough of my ass was supporting weight.

The first few rides are like that then things get used to the abuse. Taint pads are good for your butt. Find some mountain biking shorts with a padded liner. I even use chamois butter for longer rides. It reduces friction.

All of my joints made their presence known 28 miles in

What you are describing is hip angle. Lots else is going on. Basically you overuse a muscle and try to compensate with something else. This throws off all kinds of confusing signals that can result in crazy changes. When I mention fit I mean correctly placing the seat, then setting height and distance of bars relative to saddle, and finally bar and hood angle.
Just go out and have fun for a couple weeks. Have your friend assess your saddle position and leave it wherever both of you agree works. Try to relax and keep your butt flat on the saddle. Your saddle should also be flat if a level is laid across it the long way. The nose can be down a tiny tiny bit to help with being inflexible.

Removing the saddle that comes with most new bikes is usually a good preliminary step that pairs well with padded shorts. Get the full effect all at once.

I’m assuming that you would replace the saddle with a new one?

Depends which way the Kinja ads have swayed opinion that day.
Yes, I suggested to ITA97 getting a demo saddle from the shop he bought his bike from. Something his sit bones don’t bottom out on forcing him to sit on his balls again. Same applies here.
